What Books Would Charlotte Mason Choose?

Those who admire and respect Charlotte Mason may sometimes wish that she were here with us to tell us what books to use in our home schools. Good books are vital to the kind of education that we wish for our children and this responsibility weighs on us.

Each year Charlotte went through this tough selection process anew. She didn’t want teachers and parents using the same books year after year. She wanted the adults to be stimulated, as well as the children. Instead of a cut-and-dried list of acceptable books, Charlotte passed on principles to allow us to choose our own books. She did this partly because she knew she wouldn’t always be around to guide us. She was rightly hopeful that her philosophy of education would outlive her.
